Female Empowerment Is Unleashed On Swords Of Sorrow #1

As a die-hard Gail Simone fan, I couldn't contain my excitement to read her new title Swords of Sorrow from Dynamite Entertainment. Written by Simone, with art by Sergio Davila, Swords of Sorrow #1 combines a multitude of strong female characters into one book.

I want to start off by talking about the opening scene of the book where a little boy and girl are playing on an unknown island. The young girl holds up the doll they're playing with and says "and then Frala tells the hill people to fight against the Finback…" but before she can finish her thought, the boy exclaims that "a girl can't tell a tribe what to do." I applaud Simone for starting the issue off this way because it sets the tone for the female empowerment that surges throughout the rest of the issue. Irony strikes as the young boy gloats, and the mighty Jana rescues the two of them from a giant dinosaur.

Layout 1Much of the issue takes us on a journey, hopping from location to location, meeting a character, and learning that they will all be given a "sword of sorrow," which they will use in "the dark days to come." The swords are delivered by The Courier, and it catches most of the women off guard. I have to say, I did enjoy traveling to all of the different environments and meeting these women. For example, in the beginning of the issue we jump from the Stygian Desert, where a dehydrated Red Sonja is singing to herself and a vulture, to Dublin, Ireland, where Vampirella is being extra creepy. That's only two out of ten plus women. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with all of them, but Simone gives us a taste of their personalities with each encounter. Sergio Davila's illustrations are brilliantly detailed, which makes the transitions from place to place pretty smooth.

Layout 1Now that there's a really solid base for the comic, I look forward to seeing how the story progresses with future issues. I'm sure that Simone has quite an epic plan. Be sure to pick up the first issue of Swords of Sorrow from you local comic book store today!
