Female Empowerment Is Unleashed On Swords Of Sorrow #1
As a die-hard Gail Simone fan, I couldn't contain my excitement to read her new title Swords of Sorrow from Dynamite Entertainment. Written by Simone, with art by Sergio Davila, Swords of Sorrow #1 combines a multitude of strong female characters into one book.
I want to start off by talking about the opening scene of the book where a little boy and girl are playing on an unknown island. The young girl holds up the doll they're playing with and says "and then Frala tells the hill people to fight against the Finback…" but before she can finish her thought, the boy exclaims that "a girl can't tell a tribe what to do." I applaud Simone for starting the issue off this way because it sets the tone for the female empowerment that surges throughout the rest of the issue. Irony strikes as the young boy gloats, and the mighty Jana rescues the two of them from a giant dinosaur.
