There are some longtime comic book collectors who despair at so-called SJW comic books creating female versions of classic comic book characters, whether that be Jane Foster as Thor, Riri Williams as Ironheart or Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel, conveniently ignoring the Spider-Woman, She-Hulk and Monica Rambeaus of their youth. That was different apparently.
But there's nothing that dispels such objection from long-time comic book collectors that a hit comic as a result of the first appearance of one of those characters. And such it is with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
We previously noted that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #95 was booming, with the first Turtle-appearance of longterm cast member, Jennika, the ninja chūnin of Splinter's Foot Clan, and love interest to Casey Jones. Originally human, she is now a mutant turtle after her life was saved by an emergency transfusion of mutagenic blood donated by Leonardo to save her life.
A San Diego Comic-Con variant of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #95 spotlighting the final page on the cover has sold out before the show and IDW has stated that no copies will now be available for sale at San Diego. Copies have now sold in advance on eBay for up to $270.
Original TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman had his own variant edition for sale, with copies now selling on eBay for up to $190 for the virgin edition and for the trade dress version. The 1:10 variant cover edition has sold for up to $100. And the standard edition has sold for up to $75.
Other appearances of Jennika in human form are also bumping in value. Her first appearance in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #51 have also been of note. A signed CGC 9.8 edition recently sold for over $300, while the 1:10 Kevin Eastman cover sold for $90, raw.
Indeed, people who had ordered copies of TMNT #51 and #95 from Kevin Eastman's own studio over the week, as the book got very hot suddenly, were told that because the studios had had hundreds of orders of copies while they were all on break, far more than they could supply, they had to close the orders down and refund almost everyone.
The second printing of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #95 is currently on FOC this weekend.
