It's Alive! has launched a new crowdfunding campaign to publish the first issue of its next series, Breathers by Justin Madson. The comic, the first of ten issues, features several short stories set in a dystopian world where the air is dangerous thanks to a virus, forcing everyone who inhabits it to wear breathing masks (hence, the book's title). Having read an advance copy of the first issue, we can tell you that the stories are less about the details of that central premise and more about the day-to-day lives of the characters in the books and how they're affected by it.
A press release provides more details:
The story of BREATHERS follows a small cast of individuals as they struggle to make sense of the dystopian world they live in, as a virus is unleashed into the air, rendering it deadly to humans. Among them: a detective whose addiction to the drug known as "Filter K" takes over his life; a brother and sister who, due to recent events, start to wonder if the air really is deadly, or if it's all just a conspiracy; a mother and daughter who will do anything to keep their family together; and a breather salesman who is looking to make amends for his past mistakes. They are all survivors of this virus-plagued world. They are all 'breathers'. Don't miss this quiet comic book masterpiece of melancholy. We are also pleased to announce that there will be a variant cover collaboration by comic book superstars Jeff Lemire & Matt Kindt, as well as an IndieGoGo exclusive variant cover only available through this campaign!
You may have seen BREATHERS when it was a black and white, self published, small press comic. IT'S ALIVE! is pleased to finally give BREATHERS the full color, professional presentation it deserves. And it never hurts when superstars like Jeff Lemire and Matt Kindt like what you are doing, and offer up a powerful variant cover! Please join us on this incredible journey to publish BREATHERS!
In addition to a standard cover by Madson, the first issue will also feature a variant cover by Jeff Lemire and Matt Kindt and an additional IndieGoGo exclusive cover by Madson. Check out the covers below, and head to the campaign to pick up a copy ($8 for the standard edition, featuring more than 40 pages of art).
