Mairghread Scott's Writer Commentary For Swords Of Sorrow: Chaos Special

Swords of Sorrow: Chaos – Writer Commentary by Mairghread Scott

Swords of Sorrow: Chaos Special is part of Dynamite's all-female written summer event starring their top female characters. This issue is written by Mairghread Scott and drawn by Mirka Andolfo. Mairghread did this writer's commentary on the issue.

Layout 1When you have a character like Purgatori, you really have to make an entrance and this is an opening line I'm particularly proud of. It was important to me to very quickly establish how important it is to Purgatori to prove she's better than those around her in every way: mentally (she found the showgirls' routine boring), physically (killing/eating said showgirls), even sexually (gotta love someone who can make a showgirl look modest).

Additional, props to Mirka for leaving the last panel a big splash of blood. Originally it had a more detailed fight move, but I love that you get the sense of violence without having to spell things out.

Layout 1I was pretty sure they weren't going to let me have Purgatori lick someone's blood off her middle finger. While Mirka kept it subtle, I love that Dynamite let me do it. This whole event is pretty "no holds barred" and, in this book, that gets us to some pretty dark places; really fun places, but dark nonetheless.

SoSChaos-09REVThis page is a direct reference Marc Andreyko's Chastity comic, a nod to fans who are more familiar with the character, but I kinda wanted to take a moment and talk about how great the colors in this book are. I was actually surprised to see Chiara Zeppegno and Agnese Pozza use such soft, almost watercolor pastels all over the book, but they do a great job of contrasting against the violence of….say…being stabbed through the shoulder by a gladiator.

SoSChaos-11Bad Kitty ended up being a ton of fun to write; both Kitty and her "better half" ended up with a very strong sense of humor. Also, while I did not ask for it, a werewolf with a nose ring is awesome!

SoSChaos-14This page really showed off the range of humor I was going for. I tried to throw in some really weird SFX just to give the sense that some crazy stuff is going on in that house and that ended up contrasting really nicely with the dark humor of the "fur coat" line.

In my defense, the script called for the knife to be pressed against Werewolf Drug Dealer's face, but props to Mirka for having Kitty skin the guy on-panel.

SoSChaos-19I had a lot of fun with imagining what these women wanted most in the world. Purgatori's being worshipped by humanity as a dark goddess, Chastity never gets turned into a vampire and Bad Kitty…eats grapes off a naked dude's junk. By the by, Mr. Grapes is a bit more front and center than I expected us to get away with, but I'm not complaining. Since I knew the Chaos Ladies were always going to be a bit cheesecake-y it seemed only fair to put a little male skin out there too. Not that I expect #grapes to start trending on Twitter…but I really hope it does.
