Marvel Shocker: Kevin Feige Takes Over Comics as New Chief Creative Officer
In a shocking move that could represent the biggest regime change at Marvel Comics in recent memory, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has been promoted to Chief Creative Officer for Marvel, overseeing not only movies, television, and other media, but publishing as well.
Joe Quesada previously held the role of Chief Creative Officer, and both THR and Deadline reports that he will still fill a creative lead role, reporting to Marvel President Dan Buckley. ComicBook.com says that Quesada's new title will be EVP, Creative Director. Buckley will report directly to Feige, alongside all other top-level executives across Marvel's divisions, for creative and editorial matters, while still reporting to Marvel Chairman Ike Perlmutter for sales, licensing, and other business matters. The mastermind behind Marvel's shared universe of movies, Feige has risen to greater and greater power at Marvel, even wresting away control of the movie division from Perlmutter in 2015. Now, he will oversee the creative direction of everything, including comics.
Though Marvel routinely owns the market share in the comics direct market, sales of individual titles have steadily declined over the decades, even while Marvel's movies have topped the box office. Will Feige be able to bring his sales magic to Marvel's comic book line? And would he consider drastically changing concepts longtime readers hold dear to modernize the business? How will Perlmutter react?
This is a breaking story and we're sure we'll be talking about this a lot for the foreseeable future, so stay tuned.
