An England, Courtesy Of DC Comics' Grayson
Today's Grayson goes to England.
Now I live in England, and am rather sensitive to the way she appears in American comic books. So let's take a fine toothcomb to check it out.
Finishing schools, the reserve of the upper class, and the nouveau riche, not particularly representative of any England I know, though St Hadrian's does recall the rather subversive St Trinian's cartoons…
But this seems a little tamer…
Or is it?
There we go. Superheroic assassins for Spyral. That's more like the St Trinians I know. But what about the rest of the country?
There is no Farmington in Leicester but in the winter, yes it is that dark and that windy at that time… a London cab is probably a little conspicuous, like a New York yellow taxi in the backskirts of Utah. Leicester does look a little desolated even for the rain, at that time. And also none of the more modern street furniture you might expect… no directions, yellow lines, street signs, bus stops, road works, ads for the local strip club and the like.
That's not bad….
That's not bad either.
Clas Myrdin, that's Welsh for Merlin's Enclosure, an early name for Britain. But THEY seems quite an awkward acronym. Was THEM taken?
I have to say, no Big Ben seen out of the window, no one wearing kilt, no one wearing a bowler hat and no one saying "what what, pip pip" or "it's a jolly 'oliday wiv Mareeee".
Not bad at all. 75%
Now go torture one of the new kids, Seeley.
