Beano 1939 Annual Handed In To Charity Shop

Beano 1939 Annual Handed In To Charity ShopOkay, so it's not the $1,500,000 of an Action Comics #1.

But a copy of the first Beano Annual, the first hardback collection of pages from the weekly children's comic, with new material to boot, was handed in to a charity shop in St Andrews in the UK.

The branch of Cancer Research in question received the book in a bag with a number of donations. Eagle-eyed worker Matthew Harris (pictured) picked it out, realised its significance, noted that it was in relatively good condition for its age and called the publisher DC Thomson who confirmed its sought-after nature.

The book is currently on display in the charity shop but is currently not for sale. That will happen in June, where it is expected to sell for at least two thousand pounds (around $3500).

The Beano is one of the most commercially successful comic books of all time, and is still in print today every week, since its first publication in July 1938 (though it went biweekly during the Second World War to preserve paper and ink stocks). Last September, it published its 3500th issue.

You know, if I sold a kidney I could afford that…
