Comic Book Price Rise Only Beaten By Slurpees, Gold, New York Times And Empire State Ticket
Wallet Pop has run a price comparison chart across the noughties, seeing what everyday items have increased in price over the last ten years and by how much.
And while the price of a Slurpee jumping from 99c to $2.12 runs high up the chart at a whopping 122% increase, a comic book jumping from $1.99 to $3.99 with a 100.5% increase comes pretty high up the list.
The $3.99 price point has been justified by companies as reflecting increases in printing costs, distribution and talent – and in one controversial address, by whatever the market will bear. Certainly in comparison a music CD has only increased by 2.5% in price, Time Magazine by 41%, a movie ticket 42%, a bestseller novel 0.14%, while a bottle of Martini and Rossi Spumante has fallen 36%.
Ooh, I'll go out and buy a couple of bottles.
The New York Times however has rocketed from 75c to $1.99, a rise of 167%. Makes that $3.99 price point look quite the bargain, doesn't it? And it's comparatively cheaper to pop into Jim Hanley's in New York than to take a trip to the top of the Empire State Building opposite.
