Comic Con Wars: MCM London Expo Vs Super Comic Con
We've already had one Comic Con War in London this year, what with Kapow and MCM London Expo blasting each other in the spring with rather pointed press releases and comments.
Kapow PR, often via Mark Millar, deliberately ignored MCM, as if it didn't exist, proclaiming a uniqueness for Kapow over a number of attributes that MCM possessed, specifically claiming itself as restarting conventions in London, claiming it was the British Comic Con in the manner that San Diego was for America. This saw MCM retaliate with a number of press releases, now describing itself as "The London Comic Con" and claiming the San Diego tag for itself.
Well now a new front has opened up. The Super Comic Con is a comics-only comic con event planned for February at the Excel Centre, the same London's Docklands venue as MCM, taking place this Friday to Sunday. The URL is registered to a medical surgery in King's Lynn, and I understand that the organiser is a doctor. Another individual involved is Harry Markos of Markosia, publishers of my own royal wedding biographes.
The only way they've been allowed to book at the venue, which hosts the MCM twice a year, is if they're a comics-only show and not a cross media event. It's debateable whether or not a comics-only show can fill that kind of capacity these days, but it will be interesting to see it try. They are also not allowed to use the phrase "Comic Con", now renaming themselved the London Super Comic Convention, a URL also registered to said medical practice.
One fallout so far has been Markosia, a regular favourite at the MCM kept on on favourable terms, has now been penalised. They won't appear in the brochure, and they'll have to pay full vendor rates rather than the discount rates they have been enjoying over the years.
This may run and run. MCM London Expo takes place this weekend. See you there…
