Dark Souls Could Have A Future In Virtual Reality
Dark Souls is known for its punishing enemies, dour tones and sharp third person combat. The series has gone from cult to mainstream in the last two years as the series slowly began to make the move from obscurity in Japan to a western household name. The jump in popularity from the initial release of Dark Souls to the widely marketed Dark Souls 2 speaks to this.
It seems that the series might differ from its iconic combat in the future though as in an interview with IGN, Dark Souls 2 director Yui Tanimura talked about the possibility of Virtual Reality in Lordan. To be fair, it seems as if the person questioning brought it up, so it's not like Tanimura came out swinging talking about VR, but his response is interesting nonetheless:
This isn't something that we are looking into detail yet, or at least right now, but I agree that the world of Dark Souls 2 is something that has a very visceral element to it.
It's mostly sort of on the realistic side, so I think that experience with the headset is something that would go well with Dark Souls as content.
I must say that I can't 'see' Dark Souls in VR, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be great. I don't even think it has to be in first person truth be told. There are certainly other ways of framing a world in a VR headset that aren't the user's perspective. Third person games using the technology could be great if developers found interesting ways to use peripheral vision.
We will see how this goes. I'm not holding my breath, but it does set the mind wondering. Just what would a Dark Souls VR game look like?
