Do The Right Thing's Mookie Is Back In Red Hook Summer, Shooting Begins Today

Last time we reported on writer-director-actor Spike Lee he was in talks to direct the remake of Park Chan-Wook's revenge thriller Oldboy, but it seems that he's planning a return to his roots first.

Black Film reports that Lee's next film Red Hook Summer will see him reprising the role of Mookie, the character that he played in his 1989 film Do The Right Thing.

For those who haven't seen it, Do The Right Thing was about one extremely hot summer's day in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighbourhood of Brooklyn, where Lee grew up. As it may well say on the back of the DVD box "racial tensions rise with the temperature as Mookie, a pizza delivery boy, clashes with his Italian-American boss, played by Danny Aiello, and his sons played by John Turturro and Richard Edson."

I won't spoil the climax of the film for you, but let's just say that it doesn't end well.

According to Black Film's "close source," Red Hook Summer is about an adult from Atlanta spending a summer in the Red Hook neighbourhood of Brooklyn. The only other hint we have is from Spike Lee's twitter feed:

Wake Up. I been up since 430am. On the way to the set of THE NEW SPIKE LEE JOINT.Today is 1st Day of Shooting.Awwwwwwwwwwww Sheeeeeeeeeeeeet.

You heard it here. If you live in Red Hook and you're a fan of Spike Lee then keep your eyes peeled – assuming they're shooting on location then there's a good chance you might spot Mookie back in action… though who knows if his delivery skills are as sharp twenty years on?
