I'd Buy That For A Dollar Less… The New Price Of Thor?

After the departure of Joe Michael Straczynski and Olivier Coipel, Kieron Gillen and Billy Tan take over Thor for at least six issues. And there seems to be one very important change. The price will fall from $3.99 to $2.99.

This appears to be the first price drop at Marvel for such a comic book. For the last year cost creep has been rampant across the Marvel line, with certain series and special projects jumping from $2.99 to $3.99, spreading to mini-series, MAX, titles Marvel Knights, Ultimates books, and the better selling regular monthly titles, the number of Marvel issues at that price point increasing most months. An early Bleeding Cool article pointed at a speech made that seemed to say Marvel were testing the market to see how much of a price increase it could stand. And of late the answer seems to be "quite a bit."

It might be that Marvel wish to offset the expected drop in numbers and interest in the title after JMS leaves, by giving readers a financial incentive to stay on.

But for those making harsh choices in their comic book spending down to a perfect storm of the recession and a 33% or higher price increase in their favourite titles, Thor may give them a chink of hope tjat certain other titles may join Thor.

Or it could just be a price difference for one issue and it will jump right back for #605 or maybe #610. Or not.

But for Thor fans, they're saving $1 in November. Which they could spend on downloading People We Want by Kenickie. Kieron would approve.

Marvel chose not to comment on this piece. Kieron had no bloody idea.
