Ink and Bone Gets A New Dimension
Alasdair Stuart writes for Bleeding Cool.
I've always had a sort of Pavlovian reaction to the Dimension Films title card. Ever since I went away to University in the '90s, when they were at their peak, Dimension have been responsible for some of my favorite movies. The Crow, The Prophecy (Which is brilliant by the way. If you've not seen it do, it's basically Wings of Desire with Christopher Walken, Viggo Mortenson and occasional eye gouging), From Dusk Till Dawn, the Scream trilogy, Mimic, Phantoms (Totally worth it for Peter O'Toole's slow motion horror in one scene), Existenz, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and a bunch of others. I associate Dimension with fun to great genre movies and whilst they've got some clunkers on their books for sure, I'm still very fond of their work. And frankly, several of the clunkers.
Now, Deadline reports, Dimension have picked up a spec script that sounds perfect for them. Ink and Bone, written by Zak Olkewicz. They describe the script as;
'when an editor is dispatched to help a reclusive horror writer finish his latest book, she discovers he's being held prisoner in his house by everything he's ever written.'
Sort of Six Characters In Search Of An Author To Brutally Subjugate To Their Will then. That sounds fun, and the fact it's described as tonally similar to the splendid 1408 makes me very happy. As does the fact that it seems, at distance, to be covering loosely similar ground to John Carpenter's In The Mouth Of Madness. Just without as much of Sam Neill frothing I suspect.
Olkewicz bears watching by the way. He made the 2012 Young and Hungry List and has a second spec script, called Marked, being developed at Chernin Entertainment. It'll be interesting to see which script gets made first, if either do, and what sort of tone they set. Personally, Ink and Bone sounds like a good bet, especially sitting with Dimension, but we'll see.
