Preview Keeper Issue #3 – Just Your Average Soccer Serial Killer Story

By Alasdair Stuart

Geoff Wessel is a creator who never disappoints. I've talked about his stuff here before, and now, the latest issue of Keeper, his soccer/serial killer book is out. The hook is deliciously simple: imagine Tim Edwards was Dexter Morgan. The executions are brutal but the execution? That's flawless. Here's a preview.

Keeper-Goal KickLook at how the perspective's shifted there, showing us the tracking shot of the ball down the pitch and the distance covered whilst keeping the camera static. New artists Carlos Pedro (Fast and Frightenting) and Stephen Denton (Dept. of Monsterology) are at ease on and off the pitch and art like this is just one example.

Taxi SceneThis taxi scene is brilliantly handled, the decompression of time letting us zero in on the two men and the differences between them. The dialogue here, etched back to the absolute minimum, only heightens that unease. Scott's a predator and this scene shows just how dangerous he is with real grace and subtlety. It's also an immensely unsettling, queasy moment. Scott's animal is never far from the surface and here it's even closer than usual.

These are just two examples of the quality of work in Keeper. The entire creative team are on top form, the book's premise is unique and uniquely well-handled and the whole thing moves with a real confidence and swagger. All three issues are available now on Comixology for the princely sum of 69 pennies or 99 cents. Go, buy them, and take on the Keeper. Just be sure not to miss…
