Rebellion Brings Classic Strategy Game MoonBase Commander To Steam

Background

Rebellion have released a new game to the platform Steam, only it's not exactly a new game–it's something of a classic from the early 2000's. MoonBase Commander was one of the best-kept secrets of that era, a favorite for those in the know because of two compelling features: firstly, its easy to learn format for new gamers, and secondly, its increasing complexity to challenge experienced gamers. But now it has an added appeal–it's pretty much perfect for LAN playing against work-mates and friends. The premise of the game is that earth resources are tapped out and nation-states are locked in increasingly rocky alliances, so it's essentially every man for himself. The player takes up the role of setting up their own lunar territory with the opportunity to build their own "space empire" through strategizing on the use of land, energy, weapons, surveillance, and shielding techniques.

The easy to learn aspect include the basics of setting up your territory, while the "difficult to master" developments are based on your own ambitions as a player customizing your terrain and challenging other factions to expand the empire you're developing. At $5.99 it's also reasonably priced, making it likely to take off as a universally appealing venue for friends to work out their aggressions and one-upmanship in short stints or longer gameplay over time. In the 12 years since the game's original release, it's preserved a cult following but with a renewed interest in strategy-based games, it's ripe for a renaissance. It was originally developed by Humongous Entertainment for Infogrames (later Atari), but it was "rescued" at an Atari auction by Rebellion in 2013.

Jason Kingsley, Creative Director and CEO at Rebellion explains:

MBC was one of our first priorities at the Atari auction. We're big fans of the game – it's a classic example of simple, elegant design and its aged so well. Our main priority was getting Steam support sorted and show to a whole new generation of PC gamers.

You can check out MoonBase Commander through its Steam location and also through the Rebellion Game Store, but there's also a nifty trailer to introduce you to the MoonBase world:

MoonBase Commander may still have to be something of a secret if you're taking advantage of Steam's advice to fly under administrative notice at work, but among gamers, it could be the next classic celebration of strategy that brings players together.
