The Women Of Marvel And YA Black Widow: Forever Red Book Panel @Bookcon NYC 2015

By Jemal Flores

At BookCon in New York City, the Women of Marvel panel was held at the Jacob K. Javitz Convention Center. This year alone, according to author Margaret Stohl (Beautiful Creatures series ) there are 12 female lead comic book titles."Women are killing it," said Stohl. They are, indeed, killing it. Titles this year with female leads are Thor, She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, and Captain Marvel, The all female X-Men and A-force. Let's not forget the Black Widow.

20150530_152909At the panel alongside Margaret Stohl were Adri Cowan, Social Media Manager at Marvel and Maryann Zissimos, the PR Manager of External Communications at Disney Publishing.

20150530_153103Stohl was given a collection of Spider-Man comics almost 20 years ago. She read a whole storyline all the way through, and that is how she likes to approach characters ever since. That is how Stohl stays true to the characters. " I want to do right by Natasha Romanov more than anything.", she said.

20150530_153113When asked, Stohl said that she thinks that it is no accident that women in comics right now are having a moment, and it's no accident that Natasha is having a moment. She went on to say," People feel really passionate about Natasha Romanov because Natasha has been with us for a really long time now. She's ours in some fundamental way." Margaret mentioned how Kelly Sue Deconnick (Captain Marvel) and Sana Amanat (Ms.Marvel) are doing so well now. She said, "The characters are real" to fans.

Stohl said that she follows the comics and all the films. She had to get inside of Natasha's head to write the character, she added.

20150530_153130At the end of the panel, I asked for a copy of the advance proof of the Black Widow: Forever Red book. I will read it and give a review without spoilers in future.  The book is due in October of 2015.
