Ultimate Comics Spider-Man By… Shock! Horror! Bendis And Pichelli
It was only a few months ago that Bleeding Cool said that Sara Pichelli would be joining Ultimate Spider-Man. After publication, Bendis popped up to say that David Fuente was not gone. Well it appears that he is now. Looks like we needed a relaunch to make it properly official.
Of course Marvel basically spoiled a new Ultimate Comics Spider-Man a while ago.Well, it's all part of Marvel's The Ultimate Comics Universe Reborn relaunching of the Ultimate line, in August and September. In a press conference recorded online we learnt the following;
Brian is actually more nervous about this launch than the first Ultimate launch with the risks they are taking
"I hope people will tune in, because we're doing something that has never been done before." -Brian Michael Bendis
Brian singing the praises of Sara. "I'm just trying to tell a story worth her time."People will see from the very first page that this is very different from what we've seen before. Not for shock value or cheap theatrics, but for new characters and a new landscape to explore Marvel."
The goal is for the Ultimate Universe once again to show something you can't see anywhere else. It has to be completely different from everything.
Brian saying how when he and Mark Millar were hired to start the Ultimate Universe they were seen as unique voices with something new to say. He is incredibly proud of Jonathan Hickman, impressed by Nick Spencer, and is excited to work on a "tight, cohesive universe with them."
Brian saying that he, Jonathan and Nick have been working together for months to plan this, which will contrast from the early days of the original Ultimate Universe where Ultimates had a different schedule an Ultimate Spider-Man really couldn't acknowledge it as much as he wanted to.Brian is talking right now about how there will be more interaction between all of the Ultimate books moving forward, but Ultimate Comics Spider-Man will still stand on its own–no need to buy the other books to understand what's going on.
"No guts, no glory" is Axel Alonso's motto for Ultimate Comics
(It's mine for Siege #2 – Rich)
Brian saw people online throughout this week as we did these blogs wondering if he was bailing out, but he says he won't be leaving until get gets handed a pink slip.
"They will have to pry this book from my cold dead hands. I joke, but seriously." -Brian Bendis
Mark Paniccia talking about Ultimate Fallout and how there will be cool Easter eggs throughout. Also saying Sara Pichelli will be drawing a chapter "that you cannot miss."
Brian and Mark both praising Sara, in particular stuff like background and fashion design, which Brian calls "a lost art"Brian saying Ultimate Spider-Man #160 and Ultimate Fallout were two of the most emotional comics from him he has ever written. Mark says he cried. Brian says "You cried at Red Hulk."
"There are some elements of Spider-Man even more important than Peter Parker, and those will continue into the new series." -Brian Bendis
Brian says Spider-Man will have new powers in this new series. He did research on spiders.
"This needs to be a new #1 issue even by the most cynical fanboy qualifications." -Brian Bendis
Brian and Axel both say what's coming up will be controversial and it will spark discussion. He thinks he will have to unplug his computer. "Or not."
"Death of Spider-Man is about one moment connecting two books. The new books will be more like the early days of the original Marvel Universe where little things like Thor flying by in a Spider-Man book was really cool." -Brian Bendis

The issue of whether or not the public at large knows something has happened to Spider-Man and that there is a new Spider-Man out there will be addressed in Ultimate Fallout.
Brian talking about how he didn't realize during the Thor premiere in LA he was in the background of our live coverage "looking like an idiot." You're welcome!
On the supporting cast, there will be new characters but they will need to meet old supporting cast members along the way who will also become part of the book.
There will be returning villains, new villains, an Ultimate versions of classic villains Brian can't believe he hasn't done yet. Mysterio will remain a major threat and new threats will come out of the X-Men book as well.
According to Brian, many of these plans and storylines have been discussed for the last couple years and held until "it was time"
David Lafuente will be moving over to New Mutants. Brian hopes to have him back for an Annual or something like that.
Ultimate Comics Spider-Man will be shipping more than 12 times a year."Captain America will have a big emotional connection to the story." -Brian Bendis
The new Spider-Man costume was originally designed by Sara and refined by Joe Quesada
"A lot of people make it clear that the Ultimate Universe was their way into comics or back into comics an that they have an emotional connection to these characters. I do too and don't take it for granted. I take the relationship readers have with Peter, Mary Jane, etc. seriously. Some scary stuff is coming up, but ultimately, have no fear." -Brian Bendis
