Retailers, Watch Out For Southern Gentlemen Cleaning Out Estates

A retailer writes;

I just received an e-mail from someone claiming to have a Key Golden Age comic that they "found this cleaning out a estate in Virginia after the tenants passed". The comic is slabbed, and a quick price check online lists it in the $100,000+ range in its CGC rated condition.

I responded to the e-mail the same as I do for any other blind offers to sell me stuff "bring it on by the store and we can take a look at it and perhaps make you an offer on it"

I've been talking to some ComicsPro members, one who happens to be in FL and another in the Dallas area, and they received the email too. It's a scam.

image002And so it appears, whether it's a phone call from a gentleman from Kentucky calling another retailer who found an 8.5 CGC graded X-Men #1 "cleaning an estate out" who one minute didn't know anything about comics, and then was able to drop CGC grades and specific values easily – while the scans of the comic sent over could be found on Google Images… and an existing auction on Heritage.

Or another retailer who received a similar story with a similar accent claiming to be from Jefferson, Indiana with a Captain America #1 7.0.

Or another retailer who was told that someone's grandfather died, and left them a graded Detective #38. A quick Google search and the images sent over were a match for another listing.

And when paying was brought up, and Moneygram mentioned instead of Paypal, well, from Moneygram's website;

MoneyGram never recommends sending money to a stranger. Any monies received by a stranger cannot be recovered and unfortunately you will not get your money refunded back to you.

"MoneyGram is very safe and secure when sending to someone you know and trust."

So, if you're a retailer keep an eye out. And possibly an ear…
