Spoilers: Jeff Lemire Has Hidden Something Big Inside Bloodshot Reborn
Bloodshot Reborn #1 hit stores today and, while we already know that Valiant is already at work on the next 25 issues of the series, it does appear they have managed to hold a big, big piece of news back…
Did you know Jeff Lemire was drawing part of Bloodshot Reborn alongside artist Mico Suayan? Now you do…and can understand why Valiant went out of their way to keep it a secret…Major spoilers ahead!
Bloodshot Reborn is a dark, gritty, psychological comic. Tortured by the fallout of Lemire's previous series, The Valiant, the now depowered Bloodshot is living in obscurity in a cheap motel, drinking and drugging away the nightmares of the violence he's inflicted.
In his darkest moments, however, Bloodshot is visited by a strange figure — a tiny cartoon version of previous self called Bloodsquirt…drawn by none other than Jeff Lemire himself.
But Bloodsquirt doesn't just exist on TV…he also steps into the world of Bloodshot Reborn and interacts with his surroundings. So you get Jeff Lemire's trademark style drawn in on top of Mico Suayan's hyper-realistic artwork.
Two artists with two very different styles, interacting on the page, in a way nigh unseen since Image United. It's an ambitious and effective method that is sure to catch readers expecting a straightforward superhero book off-guard…and maybe disturb them a little too.
It's a hell of hook for readers who might not be traditionally drawn to a character like Bloodshot or even Valiant in general.
And it's also pretty damn funny too. Could Bloodsquirt be this year's Pizza Dog? Does Valiant have a breakout character on its hands?
It's a possibility…and Valiant tells us that not only will Lemire continue to draw him in subsequent issues, but that there is even more Bloodsquirt news to come…
