Terminator: Sector War #1 [Late] Review: Good, but is Practically the Original 1984 Movie
A Terminator returns to New York City in the year 1984. He is looking for an NYPD officer by the name of Lucy Castro. As he begins his search, Officer Castro is informed that her boyfriend is causing a domestic disturbance at her apartment. She returns home just in time to find the Terminator rampaging through the apartment complex.
Terminator: Sector War #1 is a bit of a weird one. It's attempting to capitalize on the Terminator franchise by more-or-less recreating the first movie. It's 1984, it's after a lone woman, and you don't get any points for guessing why it wants to kill her.
There are some differences. Lucy Castro is a police officer and has an arsenal with which to fight the machine from the get-go. Of course, conventional weapons don't do a lot to a Terminator. Also of note is that the action gets going a lot more quickly here, which does subtract somewhat from the tense cat-and-mouse game present in much of the 1984 Terminator film.
All that said, Terminator: Sector War #1 is far from a bad read. It's fast-paced, provides some good action, and Lucy is a decent character. The only real problem is that you've seen it before.
Jeff Stokely is the artist on this one, and he does some good work. He captures that grimy pseudo-noir dirtiness of the original movie while injecting some of his own visual style. Some faces do look a little off from a distance, but that's not too big a drawback. Triona Farrell contributes a dark and dirty color palette to further give this book the feeling of the 1984 film.
Terminator: Sector War #1 is a solid read, even if it just feels like the original Terminator movie seemingly by design. Further issues may give this miniseries more of an identity, but this first installment isn't bad by any stretch. I can recommend it easily enough, so feel free to check it out.
