Capcom & GungHo Freak Out Journalists With Timed Safe For "Teppen"

You know, of all the things I expected to get in the mail on this job, a safe with a timer on it wasn't really on there. But some promotion for Teppen proved me wrong. Yesterday, FedEx arrived at my doorstep with a mysterious package out of the blue. It was from "MysteryWoman" with a return address of a California-based post office. Getting weird things in the mail is nothing new to me. Hell, NetherRealm Studios and WBIE sent me the special Scorpion Mask version of Mortal Kombat 11 a few weeks ago. So it doesn't surprise me when packages from unnamed women come in the mail. What did catch me off-guard was seeing this…

Capcom & GungHo Freak Out Journalists With Timed Safe For "Teppen"

That's a small safe on an electronic timer. One that, shy of busting it open with a hammer, I could not open until this morning at 9:15am PDT. And I wasn't the only one to get one as several other gaming personalities and journalists got one of these in the mail. Effectively freaking everyone out. Because, you know, it's 2019 in a world where people get death threats all the time over the dumbest of things. Especially journalists who have had to deal with actual shootings and bomb threats. So let's just get it out of the way right now that while this would have been cool two decades ago, it's a bad idea in this day and age to do it now. Especially after putting a fake return address on a package. Thankfully, some other brave souls like Tom Marks from IGN and Greg Miller from Kinda Funny took the time to break theirs open. And while they didn't reveal what was inside, we saw that they weren't hurt and felt a little safer. So what happens when you actually let the timer count down? This happens…

Yep. It was a promotion for the mobile fighting card game Teppen from Capcom and GungHo Online Entertainment. While I love Capcom to death and have respect for what GungHo produces… this probably wasn't the best way to send a promo. I'm happy for the free t-shirt and pins, but the gaming journalist who has actually been threatened over social media in me has to say "NOT COOL, YOU GUYS! NOT COOL!"
