PlayStation 4 Sold 5.9 Million Units During the Holiday Season

PlayStation 4 continued to be the reliable seller it is throughout the holiday season, as Sony has given us a peek at what numbers the console put up.

PlayStation 4 Sold 5.9 Million Units During the Holiday Season

PlayStation 4 has remained an incredibly consistent seller since its release in 2013. That wasn't a given when it was coming out, as just before this generation, there were several pondering if this would be the last due to waning interest in home gaming (it all sounds very silly now). Yet, the console came out the gates flying and hasn't looked back.

It is still doing that today as it turns out too. Sony Interactive Entertainment has put out some official numbers for their holiday sales, and they remain as impressive as ever. In a note on their website, the company claims it sold 5.9 million consoles to customers across the 'holiday period'. The period is effectively the end of November and December, so that really is a lot in such a short space of time. It was also said that 55.9 million games were bought during the period too, meaning that all important attachment rate remains high.

To go along with this announcement, SIE also revealed that 73. 6 million consoles "sold through" in its lifetime. Sony also added:

Thanks to the continued support from our fans across the globe, we are honored to announce remarkable sales during the holiday season. PlayStation Network continues to demonstrate spectacular growth, with the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers surpassing 31.5 million, and PS Store recording its largest-ever monthly sales of content in December 2017.

The PlayStation 4 has remained a staple for a lot of gamers, and I don't expect that to slow down anytime soon. The PlayStation 3 ended up selling around 83 million consoles by the time its life was over, so I have no doubt we will still be celebrating the predecessor overtaking that number before too long. It's not hard to see why either. The PlayStation 4 really is just a solid console.
