Spelunker Party Is A Glorious Throwback Machine
Spelunker Party is definitely a party, let me tell you that much ahead of time. It is exactly the kind of party that ends in wrecked friendships, endless frustration, and copious deaths. So, it's exactly the kind of party I live for. Despite being an all-ages title, not for a second of playing Spelunker Party did I feel like I was playing a game designed for kids. Even though it pretty obviously was made with kids in mind with everything from easily understandable dialogue, bright colors, and pets.
But it reminds me a lot of the old school Nintendo games. You know, like the original Mario Party or Mario Kart? Where it didn't matter what the game looked like or was about, the main focus was on having fun with your friends. And occasionally smacking them with a red shell or seven?
Spelunker Party is a perfect example of how simple games can be the best sometimes. There aren't a lot of complicated mechanics, actions, or dialogue. But its engaging because its fun, and its short. Which suits the Switch well with its portablity.
There is a lot to be charmed by in Spelunker Party if you're willing to let yourself be charmed. Especially if you play with friends. And yes, it does come with splitscreen co-op for local multiplayer. Which is always a plus on my personal nostalgia wheel. Nothing makes a party game better than being able to play on the same screen at the same time. I have absolutely strung a bunch of moniors together in the same room to play "local" multiplayer, but it doesn't have the same playful feel as splitscreen does.
Sure, it won't be winning any "game of the year" awards, but I have nothing bad to say about it.
All in all, Spelunker Party is a delightful addition to the Switch's repertoire of games. And it doesn't make for a bad addition to anyone's game library. So if you're looking for a way to keep yourself entertained on your dailu commute, to keep people entertained at actual parties, or as a way to bond with your kids, you could do a lot worse.
