Stretching Out An Upgrade: We Review One Piece: Unlimited World Red Delixe Edition
One Piece: Unlimited World Red has been around for about three years on a couple other consoles, but this year Bandai Namco released their Deluxe Edition onto the Nintendo Switch with the hopes of snagging some Nintendo fans with a complete version of the game on something a little better than the 3DS. The game itself is exactly like the previous incarnation that came out in 2014, but with a few extra additions that help make this a true Deluxe Edition.
The action adventure title shows off all of your favorite characters from the anime with a cool story and a unique combat system. Throughout our playthrough it felt like you were getting a mesh of five or six different genres of games all rolled into one, essentially taking all of the best bits and pieces that people like from certain genres and mixing them together to create something that plays a little more compact and concise. Along with a touch-up on the graphics to make the character models stand out more, the combat system more fluid, and the world the explore feel a lot more full than previous incarnations.
Now that's not to say this version is the best game ever made, it comes with some flaws that are a little hard to overlook. The first one being the co-op mode, which on paper probably sounded like a good idea but comes off slightly busted with one of the worst split-screens I've seen this year. The environment itself is also weird, as they went to work making your adventure seem more important, but the background and settings feel more cartoonish than they should be for the people you're playing with.
Ultimately, One Piece: Unlimited World Red Deluxe Edition is a pretty decent and faithful title when it comes to being a video game based on a series. It does have some kinks it needs to work out, but that's pretty much in the developer's hands if they wish to throw in some updates. If you're a One Piece fan, that isn't going to matter much as you'll be taken right back into the pirate lifestyle with your favorite heroes and villains. But if you're a casual fan and you expect just a little bit more from this kind of title, maybe stay away.
