The PlayStation 4 has Sold 75 Million Consoles Thus Far

Sony announced during its financial results that the PlayStation 4 had sold a staggering 75 million console units over its lifetime, although it's not all good news as it seems the console has peaked.

The PlayStation 4 has been somewhat of a monstrous success. Before it was released, many were wondering if this console generation would be the last and if interest in home console gaming was falling by the wayside. Five years later, it's easy to see that isn't the case. This generation flew out the gate, and the PlayStation, in particular, has posted impressive numbers.

We now have a broader view of those numbers too, as during Sony's financial report for the fiscal year (via GI.Biz), we know that the PlayStation 4 has sold a staggering 75 million units. The console is closing in on the PlayStation 3 lifetime number (thought to be around the 83 million mark) and it presumably has at least a couple more years left in the tank.

It's not all cause for celebration though, as the console has seemingly peaked. It was revealed that it sold 19 million units across the 2017 fiscal year, down from the 20 million it sold in 2016. Furthermore, Sony expects sales to drop again as it is projecting a 16 million year in 2018.

That being said, the PlayStation 4 is clearly still making Sony incredible bank and has a decent library ahead of it yet. It's one of the most successful consoles of all time already, so seeing where it finishes will be interesting. Now that sales have started to slow though, I expect that already bubbling talk of a PlayStation 5 will only begin to grow even more.
