The PS4, Vita, & PC Will Get The King of Fighters '97 This Spring

One of the few fighting games that didn't get a wide release back during the late '90s is The King of Fighters '97, which was primarily an arcade title before going to the NeoGeo, Sega Saturn and PlayStation in Japan only. Sure, the game has popped up here and there on various digital releases, but never really got the worldwide release that it should have like other contemporary titles at the time like Street Fighter and Tekken. We may be on our way to seeing it, however, as SNK announced during EVO Japan 2018 that the game will finally be getting a release on PC, PS4, and the Vita this spring, but yet again, it's only in Japan.

There's no word yet as to whether or not we'll see a release in North America or Europe, but there is a glimmer of hope as the company announced that there will be online competitive play in this new version. So that at least leads to reason that somewhere down the road, if the game does well in Japan, we might see a worldwide release as we can't imaging SNK would spend that much money on fighting servers and not put them to good use.
