Destiny Will Be Offering Micro-Transactions For Emotes Soon
I've long talked about my love for Destiny. As some one who has put 100s of hours into the game, I especially admire the work Bungie did with The Taken King. I'm genuinely excited about how the future will shape up.
This new post on the Bungie website has left me concerned though. The post, once distilled, reveals the game is getting micro-transactions. Granted, they aren't for anything important though. There will soon be 18 emotes being sold by Tess Everis at the Tower, which can be bought with a new purchasable currency, 'Silver'. As Bungie describe:
To acquire these items, you'll first need to pick up some "Silver," a new in-game currency that will be available for purchase through the store associated with your console. Images and descriptions for each available emote, along with pricing information for Silver will be made available Tuesday, October 13th, alongside the launch of the in-game storefront right here on Bungie.net as soon as the content is live.
If you're not interested in what Tess has to offer, you won't ever be forced to pluck an item off of her shelf. You'll still receive updates to the game, and you won't lose a Crucible encounter or fail to clear a Raid because you didn't have the right Eververse Trading Company emote equipped.
You'll also get some Silver in your account when this goes into effect next Tuesday, to buy an emote or two and try it out.
Honestly, to me, this feels like a lot of friendly padding for something that is a troublesome in the Destiny mould. There are already people loudly complaining about the cost of the game, what with the pricy expansions continually adding to the overall cost. Micro-transactions, in any form, give off a rather worrying disregard for that concern.
Obviously, you are free to get behind this and buy emotes at your leisure, that's your prerogative. I won't ever supports this myself though. I do worry that giving an inch in the emote section could open the door to more game changing micro-transactions in the future. I'd maybe be more receptive if Silver ware attainable in the game, but I'm not digging this reveal as is.
I'll obviously have to see how this plays out to make any informed decision, but I feel a little uneasy by this news. I'm fine with this if this stays purely cosmetic, but even then…there is still a concern about offering the option
