Warner Brothers Has Been Warned By The FTC For Not Disclosing YouTube Partnerships On Shadow Of Mordor
Brands reaching out to YouTube stars is nothing new. The influencers have a huge and hungry audience who really do listen to what the personalities say. However, it becomes a problem when the work of these brands are paid for and not fully disclosed.
That is what has gotten Warner Brothers and other YouTube stars, including PewDiePie, into trouble recently. In a report, the FDC has found that Warner Brothers didn't do enough to point out that it was working with prominent YouTubers in a Shadow of Mordor campiagn. The WB supposedly payed hundreds to tens of thousands for video work with the users. These videos had strict guidelines about what could be shown, and largely are seen as 'paid for positive content'.
The FDC have said:
Under a proposed FTC order announced today, Warner Bros. is barred from failing to make such disclosures in the future and cannot misrepresent that sponsored content, including gameplay videos, are the objective, independent opinions of video game enthusiasts or influencers.
This means the company is on a very tight leash now, and also highlights the ongoing relationship between YouTube and game developers. With the platform so new, and with younger personalities, there are bound to be teething issues in ethical areas. They better work out quick though, as it seems the FDC is clamping down.
