Virginia Man Fatally Shot While Playing Pokémon Go

Ever since the launch of Pokémon Go this past summer, a number of trespassing violations, public fights, and even fatalities have been reported by the media. Unfortunately, a misunderstanding over the game may have cost a Virginia man his life. According to CBS 6 in Richmond, 60-year-old JianSheng Chen was shot in an altercation with a security guard on January 26. According to attorneys, Chen and other family members had been warned not to trespass and barred from the River Walk Clubhouse prior to the incident. Chen was parked in his car on the property at 11 p.m. when he was approached by the guard, who opened fire because he feared for his life.

According to reports and attorneys, there is a Pokémon gym at the clubhouse where Chen and family members go frequently, and that Chen had taken up playing the game to bond with his grandchildren. An attorney for Chen says the situation escalated quickly due to a language barrier, and since a gym requires you to stay for an extended period of time, the guard may have taken the incident as frequent trespassers who refused to comply. The shooting is currently under investigation, no word on an outcome yet or whether the family will sue any of the parties involved.
