Here's the pitch for The Guilt Trip: Seth Rogen is an inventor, Barbra Streisand is his loud, over-affectionate, decades-single mother. They go on a road trip to sell Rogen's inventions and a great number of awkward situations ensue!
It sounds like a decent set-up, but this new trailer doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in me. It looks like a somewhat sub-standard outrageous-character-plus-straight-character road trip comedy littered with "aren't parents embarrassing?" humour. The main appeal comes from the reputation of the two leads, who are both talented enough to turn around lacklustre material, but there's only so much that can be done for purple penis jokes.
The creative team of Crazy Stupid Love and Cars screenwriter Dan Fogelman and The Proposal director Anne Fletcher aren't really to my taste either.*
But don't take my word for it. Watch the trailer below; at the very least you'll learn a little something about hitchhikers.
*Brendon's note: I love Dan Fogelman, I suspect Hannah hasn't seen any of the films he's actually written rather than written just little bits of.
