Booze Geek: Wet Hot American Wheat Ale

american-wheatBy Dylan Gonzalez

Beer: Wet Hot American Wheat Ale
Brewery: Finch's Beer Co.
ABV: 5%

Recently I have been commuting through Penn Station a lot and to my amazement, I have been making a couple of pretty good beer finds. On my most recent outing, my eyes caught a can that I had to get if only for the novelty. I snagged a can of Wet Hot American Wheat Ale, made by Finch's out of Chicago.

Wet Hot American Wheat Ale
poured a half-inch head that lasted a long time. It was a slightly cloudy yellow color. Despite not being marked as so, it was definitely an unfiltered beer as I saw a good amount of sediment floating around at the end of the pour. It gave off the scent of light banana and yeast.

I was surprised by how hoppy this beer was, given that it was labeled as a wheat ale. However, I later discovered that it is in fact a pale wheat ale. Typically, I am a fan of that style of beer, but I did not think this one pulled it off right. There were just some traces of banana in the finish, which also tasted rather herbal. Most of the beer's flavor was just bitter hops, with not much other character.

Overall, I found Wet Hot American Wheat Ale to have a very strange flavor palate. The combined styles of pale ale and wheat did not work for me. However…

What to Drink This To
:

If you are a fan of the cult movie (and now Netflix series) Wet Hot American Summer, then there is no other beer for you. I recall the first time I was watching the movie this year in anticipation of the series. I was utterly perplexed at the oddness of the film. But as the layers of weirdness grew and grew, I started giving less of a hoot and loving it more. The Netflix series had its moments (the array of celebrity cameos is out of this world), but nothing will really trump WHAS in terms of out there comedy. This is a film where I fully accept a talking can of vegetables as a critical character piece.

Dylan Gonzalez happens to love beer and comic books and luckily found a place to write about both because he has no idea how to actually make money in the real world. He lives in a cave in New Jersey.
