Caroline Aherne, Creator Of Mrs Merton And The Royle Family, Dies At 52

2016 continues its scythe through the very best of Britain. Today, it has taken Caroline Aherne, who has died from cancer, aged 52.

One of the Manchester alternative comedy crew that came to prominence alongside Steve Coogan and John Thompson, Caroline Aherne first appeared on television alongside Manchester comedian and artist Frank Sidebottom, before appearing on Vic Reeves Big Night Out. It was joining The Fast Show and embedding "Scorchio" into the catchphrase map of Britain that brought her fame, but that was nothing compared to creating the fake chat show that outdid Alan Partridge, with Mrs Merton Show, the infamous question of Debbie McGee, "so what first attracted you to the millionaire Paul Daniels?" and her appeal to her audience to start a controversy, "let's have a heated debate!"

It was also bargaining with the BBC over a fifth series of that hit chat show, that got a greenlit for her real pet project, The Royle Family. A laugh-track free sitcom in the days before The Office, the show which she co-write, starred in and directed, featured a family sitting around a television, bickering. The Royle Family outdid everything she did before and cemented her writing and acting into the very heart of the country, and has joined the likes of Porridge, Dad's Army, Only Fools And Horses, Steptoe And Son, The Good Life and The Office as sitcoms that will be repeated for the rest of time. So much so that when a real-life version of The Royle Family was created, Gogglebox, with many families filmed watching that week's television, she was called upon as narrator.

Here are a few favourite moments.
