Craig Ferguson And NBC Are Looking For Puppet Masters
Those of you who used to regularly watch the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson will remember that he liked using puppets for some comedy bits. He had a variety of puppets that he would use and do different voices, but he never tried to be a ventriloquist.
Now Ferguson, along with with The Voice producer Talpa Media, Muppet creators The Jim Henson Company, are teaming up with NBC to produce a new series that puts ventriloquism in the spotlight. Top Puppet will be a competition show with celebrity judges to find the next great puppet master.
After two of the America's Got Talent winners Terry Fator (season 2) and Paul Zerdin (season 10) were ventriloquists and seeing how many successful television specials Jeff Dunham has had, NBC thinks puppets are where the money is.
Currently slated as a one-off special next summer, success could lead to more. Casting is underway now and will look to cover the full range from hand puppets, to giant walkers, to marionettes and everything in between. Even sock puppets can apply.
Ferguson is attached to produce but is not expected to host.
Maybe it's time to dig out my old puppets…. or not.
