Disney Removes Squirm-Inducing Stinky Pete Blooper from "Toy Story 2"
Disney quietly removed a squirm-inducing "blooper" from Toy Story 2, which somehow managed to stay in the original cut of the 1999 movie for nearly two decades.
The original take had Woody walking in on Stinky Pete, the crusty old prospector character voiced by Kelsey Grammar. Stinky Pete is promising to help a pair of Barbie dolls get a part in the next Toy Story movie, leering at them, and caressing one of the doll's hands.
It's a clear jab at casting-couch practices, in which men in positions of power use their influence over newcomers to the industry to trade that influence for "favors," usually involving sex. In 1999, when Toy Story 2 was released, the scene raised some eyebrows, but now, in light of multiple stories of high-powered men in Hollywood doing exactly this, it's not so funny.
It's even less funny in hindsight, with former Pixar front-man (and the person in charge when Toy Story 2 was made) John Lasseter being removed from the company that he helped create due to serious sexual misconduct allegations. Lasseter never came out and admitted the misconduct, but has apologized for his actions.
Still, first hand accounts have been pretty damning, with Deadline reporting about a troubling account in 2017, where Lassater became fixated on the voice talent for the Disney Faeries cartoons:
At the animator's insistence, Disney flew the women to a New York event. One Pixar employee became the designated escort as Lasseter took the young women out drinking one night, and to a party the following evening.
"He was inappropriate with the fairies," said the former Pixar executive, referring to physical contact that included long hugs. "We had to have someone make sure he wasn't alone with them."
Oof.
With other allegations rocking Hollywood in the #MeToo era, it's easy to see why Disney would scrub this scene from Blue Ray and VOD versions of Toy Story 2, especially considering they had a Stinky Pete of their own manning the ship for a while.
