Elba, Idris Elba Messes with James Bond Hopefuls via Twitter
Perhaps you've seen the numerous reports back and forth this week that long-time James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli has possibly said it's time for a non-white 007. Perhaps you've also seen the reports that the quote from director Antoine Fuqua both confirming this Broccoli statement… and then refuting it.
All of this comes about as current Bond Daniel Craig will reportedly be leaving the role after James Bond 25, and the call for more ethnic diversity in the film universe based on Sir Ian Fleming's spy novels has never been louder.
The number one pick on nearly everyone's list for the first non-white Bond happens to be none other than Idris Elba, who knows a thing or two about moody gun-toting characters.
Elba also knows how to mess with his twitter followers, as made apparent by a series of posts the Brit posted.
He followed that one up with this:
And, ultimately, this one:
Just from those, it's safe to assume that at this time, perhaps Elba is not in the running to take over the James Bond 007 title, at least from his point of view. As early as 2014, the role has been rumored alongside Elba, the actor commenting then to CNN:
"It would be such an honor. I mean what do we have to do here? We have to wear beautiful suits, drive nice cars, chase bad guys and date beautiful women? I dunno, sounds good to me."
That's not to say it won't happen; there have been plenty of examples of an actor (or actress) shooting down rumors only to be announced later on.
