Hideo Kojima Makes Fans Sit Through A 3 Hour Stream For A Chicken Hat

I'm convinced Hideo Kojima works on a different astral plain then the rest of us. If you've ever played one of his Metal Gear Solid games, you've probably been privy to this. Those games can be harrowing musings about war, but they can also have you in a cardboard box moving around to hide from enemies. Kojima is probably one of the only true 'directors' (in the way we think of the word) in game design and these odd quirks give the series a unique flavour.

I've gotten to the point now where I like to think Kojima isn't trying to be funny. It's possible he thinks it's perfectly normal for you to start a zoo and confuse guards with standees of scantily clad women in the middle of a war game.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain seems to be pushing these quirks even further than before, with a lot of the promo material being centered around these eccentricities. On Christmas day, he may have put out the strangest marketing for the game yet. In a 3 hour stream called Kojima Station, he opened presents and talked about movies. Before saying there was a big surprise.

That big surprise for the long wait? It was a chicken hat. Kojima revealed that if you die repeatedly in a session of Metal Gear Solid 5, you will be asked if you want to be reverted to the 'easy mode' with a chicken hat on Snake's head. This will stay for serious cutscenes too.

If you've got 3 hours and can understand Japanese, you can watch the whole video here.

For anyone who played Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes, they will know that this game most likely won't just be built on weird quirks either. That pre-game took on some really dark issues, which will make the chicken hat even more surreal.
