Holographic Homer At Comic Con Leads To Lawsuit
Homer Simpson has gotten 20th Century Fox into trouble, according to THR. The characters holographic appearance at this years Comic-Con has sparked a lawsuit from Hologram USA who is claiming the appearance infringed its patented system to project three-dimensional images onstage.
The company used the technology, a new version of the 19th century stage trick called "Pepper's Ghost", to create the Tupac Shakur performance at the 2012 Coachella Music Festival. A fact someone involved with the Simpsons was probably aware of as Simpson's creator Matt Groening even made a holographic Tupac joke.
In the case of Coachella, the festival got permission to use the technology, but here and in the case of the Michael Jackson hologram at the Billboard Music Awards, they did not. Hologram USA sued over the Jackson use as well.
There may be some existing animosity between Fox and Hologram USA's Alki David who filed the suit. This was Fox's response to the lawsuit: "This filing is totally without merit and we have no comment except to say that once again, Mr. David has demonstrated his insatiable need to remain relevant."
