Legendary Pictures to Adapt Classic Anime Gundam to Live Action
Another classic anime is making its way to the big screen. Legendary Pictures has announced that they are teaming up with Sunrise to bring the anime series Gundam to life in a live-action movie. The announcement was made at Anime Expo.
The original Gundam series is set in the Universal Century, an era in which humanity's growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies. Eventually, the people living in the colonies seek their autonomy, and launch a war of independence against the people living on Earth. Through the tragedies and discord arising from this human conflict, not only the maturation of the main character, but also the intentions of enemies and the surrounding people are sensitively depicted. The battles in the story, in which the characters pilot robots known as mobile suits, are wildly popular.
At the moment there isn't any indication about what plot line from the various series they could be following or if it's going to be an original story set within the Gundam universe. Cale Boyter will oversee the project from Lengendary, and Boyster will be working with a creative team from Sunrise.
The Gundam series has been around for 40 years and had several very successful iterations. The toys continue to sell extremely well considering how long it's been since the series was released.
