Lucifer Season 3, Episode 4 Review: Disposable Case With Some Okay Character Development
Lucifer season three, episode four has a disposable case, but some interesting character development for most of the main cast.
Writer: Jason Ning
Summary: Lucifer and Chloe investigate the murder of a youth counselor.
One of the problems with Lucifer being a procedural is that sometimes they have do cases that aren't related to the season-wide plot. That was the case for the murder this week; though it did give us the opportunity to watch all of the various main characters work through their issues. Lucifer (Tom Ellis) goes around trying to prove that a bad person is always bad. Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) tries to figure out what his purpose on Earth is now that he's lost his Angelic powers, and we get to see more of the Dan (Kevin Alejandro) and Amenadiel bromance.
The big plot point addressed this episode is the tension between Lieutenant Marcus (Tom Welling) and Chloe (Lauren German). This has been a sticking point for the first couple of episodes because Marcus has not been giving Chloe the time of day, and she is not here for that. We get some progress on that front in a way that makes very little sense. It turns out Marcus thinks Chloe is his best detective and the reason he was acting like such a jerk is because he wanted her to do her best work possible.
It's an odd technique to take, but it does push this relationship to the next level. We've been told there is going to be some sort of love triangle type of business, and Lucifer is always entertaining when he's jealous. The "I'm being a jerk to you so you'll be better" thing is sort of played out and it cheapens the dynamic almost. There had to be a better way to get these two characters talking that didn't involve such a cliché.
Lucifer season three, episode four is a perfectly suitable episode — even if it really only accomplished one thing as far as plot goes.
