'Monty Python's Life of Brian' Returns to Theaters for 40th Anniversary

Friends! Romans! Rapscallions! Monty Python's Life of Brian makes a triumphant limited resurrection to theaters for the 40th anniversary of its release.

Trafalgar Releasing, who took over rights of the film in 2018, plans a 400-screen release spanning across the UK, US, Australia, Canada, Germany and Scandinavia, according to Variety.

Life of Brian, the second film from the iconic British comedy troop following Monty Python and the Holy Grail, focuses Brian (Graham Chapman, a Jew living under Roman oppression who's continuously mistaken for the Messiah. Brian was born near the same time Jesus was.

In the film's original release in 1979, its satire on religion and its depiction in pop culture drew the ire from much of the deeply devout to the point of getting banned in Ireland and Norway.

The surviving Pythons: John Cleese, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Terry Gilliam released a joint statement:

"It's another coming of Brian, and we are here to fill the world with laughter. 'The Life Of Brian' may have been set 2000 years ago, but it's a mirror of what's going on today. Except that it's funny. It's one of the most prescient films for today's society – from 'We are all individuals' to Stan wanting to become a woman."

Trafalgar's relationship with the Pythons spans several projects, primarily documentaries, including the 2014 stage reunion show Monty Python Live (Mostly) – One Down Five to Grail." They also have the global rights outside of French-speaking territories to Holy Grail.

"It's a great privilege to be working with the Monty Python team again and to bring the 40th anniversary celebrations of this seminal comedy classic to cinemas around the world. The film continues to feel fresh, relevant and hilarious after four decades."
–Marc Allenby, Trafalgar CEO
