New Image Of Sofia Boutella In The Mummy
With two weeks to go until The Mummy's release date, it's time for more promo. Universal Pictures must have a lot riding on this movie for the amount of promotional material we're seeing for it. This time it comes from Empire and features a high-quality look at Sofia Boutella as the mummy.
She looks pretty cool, and I appreciate the fact that the producers covered her body with rags instead of going to easy route and having two pieces of cloth covering the bits that would give them an R rating. Empire also got a new quote from director Alex Kurtzman about understanding the motivations of this character:
"The thing I've been focused on more than anything is that she has a really good reason to be where she's at. If we can relate to her, and experience that weird, confusing universal feeling you get of loving and caring about the monster, then hopefully I will have succeeded."
So they want us to relate and even sympathize with the monsters on a certain level. In a few of the featurettes the quote "the villain is the hero in their own story" has come up, and that appears to be the direction the Dark Universe is going in. It's a good idea, but it's going to be a hard line to walk especially considering the body count these monsters could wrack up.
Summary: An ancient princess is awakened from her crypt beneath the desert, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia, and terrors that defy human comprehension.
The Mummy reboot is directed by Alex Kurtzman and stars Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, and Russell Crowe. It will be released on June 9th.
