[POSSIBLE SPOILERS] Pacific Rim: Uprising's Kaiju Are "More Intelligent"
Warning there are possible spoilers for Pacific Rim: Uprising in this post. It could be spoilers or it could be a mistake. We are unsure at the time but if you want to stay spoiler free move along.
We just found out that Pacific Rim: Uprising is going to be delayed but we're still getting new information from star John Boyega. He recently sat down with IGN to talk about the differences between the new and old jaegers and the new kaiju. He also either made a legitmate mistake concerning a character or dropped a spoiler.
"As you know, Pacific Rim 1 ended with Stacker Pentecost [played by Idris Elba] dying, and Raleigh [played by Charlie Hunnam] dying as well, and they feel like they've closed the Breach, but unfortunately the enemy has grown more intelligent and has other ways of doing things, and we are met with a rogue character," Boyega explained."I am playing Jacob Pentecost, who is kind of like the prodigal son of Stacker Pentecost. Now he's faced with rejoining the PPDC [Pan Pacific Defense Corps] and trying to help the fight against the Kaiju again. But it's gonna be in a different way this time."
So Raleigh didn't die at the end of the movie unless that whole scene at the end was a dream or something like that. There wasn't any indication that it was and there are a bunch of reasons why Raleigh might not make it ten years post the original film. Boyega says that the kaiju have evolved further and have become even smarter since the Breach.
"And it's still heavily influenced by Guillermo del Toro [the 2013 original's director], but at the same time, Steven DeKnight's directing. And it's gonna be really fun. It's larger than life." He added, "We've got better upgrades. The robots are moving much more swift. Yeah, we're like ballerinas up in there, it's fantastic."
It was cool watching the evolution of the jaegers through the various Marks we got to see. The Russian Mark-1 was a clunky bruise while the Australian Mark-5 was much faster and moved more like a human. It would make sense that these new jaegers would be different from the jaegers we've seen so far.
Pacific Rim: Uprising, directed by Steven S. DeKnight, stars John Boyega, Tian Jing, Scott Eastwood, Adria Arjona, Charlie Day, and Burn Gorman. It will be released March 23, 2018.
