Sherlock returned with big numbers in the UK. After nearly three years and one special, the Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman series returned to an overnight ratings of 8.1 million viewers. Easily winning the night, the series return was down 300k viewers from last years The Abominable Bride special and down 1.1 million from The Empty Hearse, the season three opener. But neither of those are bad things considering that the Abominable Bride had the unique angle of tying into the classic Sherlock Holmes era setting and the Empty Hearse was the episode that explained how Sherlock survived the fall at Reichenback Hospital. This episode, though quite shocking upon viewing, didn't really have the anticipation level.
The fourth series / season is, like the other, only the 90-minute episodes long with The Lying Detective set to air January 8th and The Final Problem on January 15th.
