Solo: A Star Wars Story – Phoebe Waller-Bridge Talks L3-37's "Revenge" and Possibly Returning to the Role
There were a lot of fun things in Solo: A Star Wars Story but one of the best parts of was easily Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the droid L3-37. Unfortunately, and a running theme of the new droids in the spin-off movies, L3 didn't make it to the final credits. Instead her AI was integrated to that of the Falcon itself. Waller-Bridge spoke to Vanity Fair and said that the ship, which seems like it's sometimes misbehaves on purpose in the original trilogy, was L3's revenge for breaking up the team.
"When the ship fucks up or the ship gets moody, that's her going, 'I know what you've done. I'm punishing you.'"
L3 was unique in that she wasn't formed completely through motion capture like K-2SO in Rogue One or in a bulky suit like the original droids like C-3PO. Instead it was a combination of the two which is one of the reasons that L3 moves unlike any other droid in Star Wars.
"They were pretty keen on me not being like any of the other droids. So any time I tried to do something that was a bit more droid-like or a bit more robotic, everyone was like, 'It's way funnier and sillier if you do it how you're doing it.' I said, 'I wasn't doing anything. That's just me.' They're like, 'Yeah, it's ridiculous. We love it.'"
Finally, droids are unique in the Star Wars universe in that they aren't limited by the passage of time. L3 could come back in some capacity and Waller-Bridge says she's up for it.
"That would be a scream. I can imagine she has quite the past. Who knows what these imaginations will come up with next? I could play L3 forever."
At the moment we don't know what the future holds for Star Wars movies. Aside from Episode IX due out next year and two trilogies in development we don't have any solid information about what the future holds. Regardless it sounds like Waller-Bridge had a great time playing L3 and we can always use more sassy droids in Star Wars.
