Sundance Audience Winner 'Searching' Debuts First Poster and Trailer

There are always surprises that come out of the Sundance Film Festival, but one movie that no one expected to be any good was Searching (previously Search). It was yet another movie told through the filter of a cell phone or computer camera — but unlike the less-than-impressive Unfriended several years ago, it worked really well. That mostly comes down to a fantastic lead performance by John Cho, but the entire concept ended up pretty enjoyable too.

The movie won the audience award at the festival and got picked up by Sony, along with a title change from Search to Searching. It has an early August release and the first trailer and poster have been released. We have a review of the Sundance screening right here if you're interested after seeing the trailer.

After David Kim's 16-year-old daughter goes missing, a local investigation is opened and a detective is assigned to the case. But 37 hours later and without a single lead, David decides to search the one place no one has looked yet, where all secrets are kept today: his daughter's laptop. In a hyper-modern thriller told via the technology devices we use every day to communicate, David must trace his daughter's digital footprints before she disappears forever.

Searching, directed by Aneesh Chaganty, stars John Cho, Debra Messing, Joseph Lee, Michelle La, and Sara Sohn. It will be released on August 3rd.
