Survival games have proven to be one of, if not the most enduring genres on the Steam storefront for over a year, finding a pretty healthy home in the Early Access model. There are, of course, a lot of examples of games not living up to their promise as they've been built upon, but those that succeed provide great experiences that have proven insanely popular.
The Long Dark is one of those games.
The title made it onto my Game of the Year list as I'm a big fan of it's dour and lonesome tone. That's why I'm excited to hear the game is doing well. In an infographic released by Hinterland Studios, it shows the the game has been bought by 258,251 players. That is a lot for a title of this size.
The infographic also shows that the game is well supported with a total of 20 updates coming to the game since it's launch at the end of September. This developer is constantly adding to the game and that is great news because there is plenty to enjoy already about it.
It's still missing a promised story mode and is in need of deeper systems, but if you want to try and hack it in a snowy wilderness on your own, there is no better experience right now for my money.
