Marvel's Agents of SHIELD returned last night to ABC for their fourth season and I have to say the show was a hot mess. A series that started off with Phil Coulson leading a special team of agents then grew into him running all of SHIELD after the Hydra betrayal and had them take on the Inhumans and Hive… it's now a series where Coulson is partnered with Alphonso 'Mac' MacKenzie to look for powered people. The team is splintered and it feels like they are being punished for having saved the world.

The introduced three elements last night. The first is what was in the box. Some kind of ghostly spirit that makes people fight against each other. It's now inside Melinda May but she seems to be handling it pretty well… so far.

Then there was the reveal of Aida created by Holden Radcliffe and shown to Leo Fitz. Now Fitz can't tell Jemma Simmons about it because she is working directly for the new director and has to do multiple lie detector tests daily. This should not only drive a wedge between the two but also… by introducing Aida completely naked it had a creepy feeling to it.

The best part was the part I was most worried about, introducing Robbie Reyes / The Ghost Rider. This isn't a case of a guy who is possessed by a demon and he is devastated by the demon's actions… Robbie seems to have come to terms with it, maybe even like it. The transformation special effects were pretty good and the short fight scene between Ghost Rider and Quake was the highlight of the episode (see below).

Without the GR / Quake stuff, the episode was more dysfunctional family drama than an episode of SHIELD. I am hoping that the next episode picks up quickly, which you can see the preview for below.
