"The Prom": Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Awkwafina, 4 More Join; Ryan Murphy to Direct/Produce [REPORT]
Creative power-house Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story, Pose, Glee) continues making the most of his Netflix deal, reportedly set to direct and produce a feature film adaptation of hit Tony-nominated stage musical The Prom – and he's bringing some major familiar faces along with him. Expected to film in December 2019 and have a Fall 2020 awards season run in theaters before airing on Netflix, the film boasts Meryl Streep (Big Little Lies), James Corden (The Late Late Show with James Corden), Nicole Kidman (Big Little Lies), and Ariana Grande (Hairspray Live!) in major roles; with Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians), Keegan-Michael Key (The Lion King), and Andrew Rannells (Black Monday) in key roles (based on exclusive Deadline Hollywood reporting).
Streep's Dee Dee Allen is a two-time Tony winner who teams with Corden's Barry Glickman on a musical about the life of Eleanor Roosevelt that results in a career-ending flop. The pair decide — along with Kidman's Angie Dickinson and Rannells' Trent Oliver — to champion a cause to save their on-life-support careers. Enter Emma, a high school senior in Indiana who isn't allowed to take her girlfriend to the prom. Grande's Alyssa is the popular daughter of the head of the PTA, while Awkwafina's Ms. Sheldon is the group's publicist, and Key's Principal Hawkins is Streep's love interest and Emma's ally.
Casting director Alexa Fogel is currently conducting a nationwide search to fill the role of Emma.
Murphy produces alongside Alexis Woodall, Bill Damaschke, and Dori Berinstein. Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin provide script, with music and lyrics from Beguelin and Matthew Sklar, based on the original concept by Jack Viertel.
From director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw and loosely based on a real-life incident, The Prom follows a troupe of hilariously self-obsessed theater stars who swarm a small conservative Indiana town in support of a high school girl who wants to take her girlfriend to the prom. Viertel developed the concept, with a book by Martin and Beguelin, music by Sklar, and lyrics by Beguelin. Damaschke, Berinstein, and Jack Lane serve as producers.
THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE GETTING IN OTHER PEOPLE'S BUSINESS.
Everyone's invited to the joyous Broadway hit that New York Magazine calls "smart and big-hearted" and The New York Times declares a Critic's Pick! It's a new musical comedy about Broadway stars on a mission to change the world, a girl who wants to change her small town, and a love that brings them all together.

A film adaptation of The Prom is just one of many projects Murphy has in play at Netflix, including Ben Platt-starrer The Politician premiering September 27 and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest prequel series Ratched with Sarah Paulson, as well as Hollywood. Murphy's next stage-to-screen adaptation will be The Boys in the Band, directed by Joe Mantello and starring the recent Broadway 50th anniversary revival cast.
