The US Has Seen The Best British TV Has To Offer. Now It Gets To Watch The Worst.
BritBox is a new digital streaming service, created by BBC Worldwide and ITV, and calls itself the largest library of British programming ever assembled in one place.
As well as classic dramas, comedy and documentaries, some of the best in the world, US views now have a legal way to see the daily soaps as well, EastEnders, Emmerdale, Holby City and Casualty, the day after they air in the UK. No news on Coronation Street but I reckon it's just a matter of time.
They also have a playlist called "Very British Beginnings" where Americans will get to see the early work of the likes of Danielle Radcliffe, Daniel Craig, Benedict Cumberbatch, Idris Elba, James Corden, Jude Law, Tom Hardy, Emily Blunt, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Helen Mirren and more, before they made it big in the US. Prime Suspect, Gavin & Stacey, Darling Buds Of May, Sherlock Holmes, that sort of thing.
They will also have US premieres such as New Blood from novelist Anthony Horowitz and Tutankhamun from writer Gus Bar.
It costs $6.99 a month, with a free trial period, and will stream on the web, smart TVs, AppleTV, iPhone, iPad and Android mobile phones and tablets – with Roku and Chromecast shortly after launch.
