Aquaman, Wonka, The Color Purple Give WB Huge Holiday Box Office Win

The holiday Weekend Box Office was won by Warner Bros, as their three-headed monster of Wonka, Aquaman and The Color Purple ruled theaters.

Article Summary

  • Warner Bros hits holiday jackpot with 'Aquaman', 'Wonka', and 'The Color Purple'.
  • 'Aquaman' leads with $38M, while 'The Color Purple' musical surprises with $18M.
  • 'Wonka' sweetens up the box office, contributing $28M to WB's festive triumph.
  • Overall Christmas Day box office sees a 7% increase from the previous year.

Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom, Wonka, and The Color Purple propelled the holiday weekend box office, as WB takes a victory lap this morning. Their triple release paid off, as the three releases combined to make $104 million over the four-day weekend. Aquaman won the three-day weekend with $28 million, under projections. It added another $10.6 million on Christmas Day, which was won by The Color Purple. The musical shocked most by scoring $18 million, setting it up for a possible long run in theaters. Wonka added $28 million over the four days. Christmas Day was up 7% from last year overall. WB marketing these three movies as a holiday event these previous couple of weeks was a genius move, and it seems to have paid off.

Aquaman Propels WB To The Top

In fourth place over the four-day weekend was Illumination's new film Migration, which was off to an okay start with $17 million. That one has to have legs to be considered a success, and many in Hollywood are ready to pounce if it isn't. Rounding out the top five was the romantic comedy Anyone But You with $8 million. Why Sony released a raunchy romantic comedy at a crowded Christmas box office and not earlier in the fall or in January with less competition will have people scratching their heads for a while. Other notables: A24's wrestling drama The Iron Claw made a solid $6.5 million, drama The Boys In The Boat made $5.3 million opening on Christmas Day, and bio-pic Ferrari made $2.8 million opening on the holiday.

The Christmas Weekend Box Office top five:

  1. Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom- $38 million
  2. Wonka- $28 million
  3. The Color Purple- $18 million
  4. Migration- $17 million
  5. Anyone But You- $8 million

Next week, nothing opens wide, as we have enough movies in theaters to hold us over until the calendar turns to 2024. After a huge holiday bow, I bet The Color Purple and Wonka will take spots one and two next week, and Aquaman swims down to third as the DCEU goes out with a whimper.
